This tutorial is primarily for our Oatmeal Melt & Pour Soap Kit, however you are welcome to use these instructions (and adjust quantities where necessary) for your own Oatmeal based soap project. If you have the Kit and prefer printed instructions you can Print the PDF Tutorial here.This project is really easy, and creates gently exfoliating oatmeal soaps, and we've teamed this kit with oatmeal and honey based scents. It's nice to add some fresh honey, it has humectant qualities, and complements the Oat and Honey fragrance theme nicely.
If you have bought the kit, you'll have:
- 1kg SFIC Oatmeal Melt & Pour Soap Base
or - 1kg Stephenson Crystal OS (Oatmeal & Shea) Melt & Pour Soap Base
- 2 x 10ml Artisan Fragrances (Oatmeal Milk & Honey Fragrance is soooo good!)
or - 2 x 10ml Pure Essential Oils

Honey Bees Rectangle (3 x Single Cavity) -
You need to supply: your favourite honey (if desired), around 1 tablespoon. Leave out the honey and the soaps are Vegan Friendly! Approximately 1 tablespoon; whether it is Wildflower, Manuka, Eucalyptus or supermarket variety, all are good as they are all soothing and have humectant qualities.
Always ensure children are supervised, especially when handling hot soap and cutting.
Equipment
1 x microwave safe jug - needs to hold 500ml or more (if Pyrex you'll need a pot mitt too as it can get very hot)
Stirring spoons or spatulas
Knife to cut the soap base
Electronic scales are useful but not essential
A Thermometer is useful, but not essential
Don't forget: Several of the scents available in this kit are vanilla based, so they will naturally discolour the soap to a shade of golden honey to chocolate brown.
Method:
- Set out the ingredients, mould and equipment
- Dice enough soap base to suit the volume of cavities in your chosen mould (volume of mould cavities can be found on the links above) and place in the microwave safe jug.

- Place the jug into the microwave, cover loosely, and melt on medium. This will take a couple of minutes for 500g, so do keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn't overheat. Try heating in bursts of 30 seconds, then stir, check and redo.
- Remove the liquid Melt & Pour Soap from the microwave and stir well to remove any lumps.
- If using honey, add this now, about 1 - 2 teaspoons per 500g, and stir through well.
- Now add up to 10g/ml (approximately 2 teaspoons (most people find 1 teaspoon or 5ml is sufficient in Melt and Pour Soap) of fragrance and stir well to combine.
- To ensure the oatmeal doesn't sink to the bottom (see picture below) check the temperature if you can, the optimum pouring temperature is 50 - 60°C. (If you don't have a thermometer, the soap will be slightly syrupy when it is the right temperature). It’s no problem if you pour hotter, but the oatmeal will settle more into the design of the mould, rather than evenly throughout the soap.

- Carefully pour into the mould cavities. As you have an exfoliant in the soap, if you do have the soap a little warm it's a good idea to half fill each cavity, then go back and top up.
- Allow several hours to set up completely before attempting to unmould. If you try to hurry unmoulding with Melt & Pour Soap by using the fridge or freezer, it will lead to sweating. At room temperature, this will take a couple of hours, depending on how hot you heated the soap and the ambient temperature

- To remove from the mould, ensure the soap is completely set. Carefully peel the mould back from the soap and remove the soap.
- Now repeat with the rest of the soap and fragrance in the kit.
- If you would like to display your soaps, wrap or store in an airtight container.
