Spearmint Pure Essential Oil has a sweetly lively, cool, minty green scent with an herbaceous base. It is very reminiscent of those green leaf shaped sweets from childhood, called, not coincidentally, ‘mint leaves’! Spearmint, with its lower menthol content, is sweeter and gentler, with a more mellow, minty aroma that regular Peppermint (Mentha piperita or Mentha arvensis). This is my preferred choice as a small component in blends for children as it is more acceptable to them than the more robust Peppermints.
It is a wonderfully invigorating oil to include in formulations, but best to avoid using towards bedtime as Spearmint Essential oil is said to increase alertness and lifts the spirit.
Spearmint Essential Oil is not a direct substitute for Peppermint Essential oil aroma-therapeutically. See Tisserand’s Spearmint vs Peppermint chart here.
