In order to avoid using mineral oil, which is a petroleum biproduct, we like to use a vegetable oil instead. We use Coconut Oil in this recipe, but you can sub in any fresh fixed oil with a long shelf life.
Like balms for skin care, there are rough wax:oil ratios to use, and you can tweak the recipe as you like. We have found that a ratio of 1:3 beeswax to coconut oil produces a nice and spreadable, but not too gloopy butter. If you are using a fully liquid oil, or Fractionated MCT Coconut Oil, we suggest reducing the liquid oil content just a tad.
What You Need:
300g Coconut Oil
100g Beeswax - Yellow or White, depending on the colour you'd like to achieve
4 x Bail Jar - Small, Round 120ml
2 x 500ml Pyrex jugs
Pot mitt
Spatula
Note: If you are not using a microwave you can make this on the cooktop or using a double boiler.
Method:
Place the beeswax into the first Pyrex jug and heat for 3 to 5 minutes, checking that the beeswax is not getting too hot, stirring intermittently. Warning! Pyrex gets very hot, use a pot mitt to handle the jug. Place the coconut oil in the 2nd jug and, if solid, heat the coconut oil for 1 – 2 mins (this will depend on the ambient temperature).
When the beeswax has nearly melted, stir and add to the coconut oil jug and heat again until the mixture is nearly
all liquid (and clear).
Remove from the microwave and sit on a board or heat resistant surface and allow it to begin cooling.
Stir intermittently during cool down, scraping the mixture away from the sides of the jug so that you create a lovely, soft and creamy, homogenous mixture.
Once it has come together and is creamy looking, you can spoon it into the jars or tubs and allow to cool overnight before lidding and labelling. Store in cool, dark place.
To Use:
Firstly ensure your wooden utensils, boards etc are all scrubbed, clean and dry. Using a spatula, cloth, paper towel or your hands, spread a generous amount of butter over the surface and allow to sit overnight. (Beware! If you have dogs leave the utensils well back on the bench as they love to eat coconut oil!) Next day, use a cloth or paper towel to buff off all the residual butter. Polish up to a nice satiny finish. Re-apply as required when your utensils and boards look dry and in need of some TLC.
