This is a great affordable project for school holidays and for fun, economical gifts - that of course smell and look wonderful!
Sugar Plum Fairy is great fragrance for this project. I have six colours in my jar, though three or four colours still give a great effect. 3 wide bands of colour are particularly effective.
Remember: The darker the colour of the salts, the darker the colour of the bath water will be!
Ingredients:
- 1 kilo Natural Sea Salt - Fine
- Essential Oils or Fragrance Oils of choice
- Liquid Lake Sunflower Yellow
- Liquid Lake Malibu Pink
- Liquid Lake Brilliant Blue
- Royal Purple Liquid Pigment Dispersion
- Natrasorb Bath (not absolutely necessary - but quite helpful to keep the salts dry)
I use approximately 30 drops of Fragrance or Essential Oil per cup of salt - you may like your salts scent a little more subtle, or a little stronger so adjust this to suit. If using Natrasorb Bath you'll be adding this before you combine with the salt.
Method:
- Divide salt in mixing bowls or pyrex jugs to match the number of colours you are using. Remember that the colours may stain plastic bowls, so use either icecream containers or glass or pyrex ware that will wash clean
- Place the Natrasorb into a mixing bowl (if using) and add the Fragrance Oil and then mix until the mixture resembles dry breadcrumbs
- Now begin to mix in the colour to the containers of salt - remember 1 drop was used for per tablespoon of salt in the picture above. Just continue mixing with an old stainless steel spoon until the colour is evenly mixed through and coats the salt granules
- Divide the fragrance "mixture" between the salt containers and stir well to combine. If not using Natrasorb Bath, add the fragrance direct, but don't forget to lay the salts out on a tray for a day or two to dry out well before packaging
- Prepare the containers you are using - we used our Small Bail Jar, though Wide Neck Tubs work quite well too. Place 1 tablespoon per layer for thin layers, or more for a thicker layer of colour
- Continue layering the coloured salts until the jar/tub is well filled so it is packed firmly and can't shake about - particularly if you are wrapping these up!
- Done!
TIP: Another economical way of presentation of Bath Salts is to use our Stand Up Pouches - They look great in those too! Just ensure you pack the salt layers well down, remembering the base is going to be a little wider so will hold more of that colour of salt.
And, just look at what you can make with the left overs - Rainbow Salt Sprinkles! Easy to mix for even the youngest Bath & Body enthusiast!
